Walking Netball Celebrates Third Anniversary In The East Riding

The council’s Sport, Play and Arts Service, in partnership with the local England Netball Development Officer Pauline Hardy, recently celebrated the third anniversary of Walking Netball starting in the East Riding of Yorkshire with a tournament at East Riding Leisure Beverley.

Teams which are based in the East Riding leisure centres of Beverley, Haltemprice, Withernsea, Driffield and Bridlington attended the competition.

Members of staff at St Mary’s Primary School have raised over £2,000 for Cancer Research UK after they took part in the March incentive ‘Walk All Over Cancer’.

In all twenty staff members, made up of teachers, teaching assistants, lunchtime supervisors and office staff participated under the team name ‘We’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Plan Your Day For The Tour de Yorkshire 2018 As Roads Will Be Closed

The East Riding will welcome some of the world’s top cyclists, including Olympic silver medallist and UCI Road World Championship winner Mark Cavendish, on Thursday, 3 May when Beverley hosts the start of both the men’s and women’s Tour de Yorkshire.

Thousands of spectators are expected to line the race route in the East Riding as the peloton races through the area, taking in a number of towns and villages including Tour de Yorkshire debutants Howden and Hornsea.

Ivan, who was a well known figure in Beverley, passed away last autumn at the age of 83. He worked for 30 years as a PE teacher, and spent the whole of his professional life at one school; Longcroft, where he taught generations of children to enjoy and appreciate their fitness.

Local MP Graham Stuart said the announcement of a new urgent foot care clinic in Beverley, due to open this summer, is a major step forward for the campaign to reduce diabetes-related amputation rates across the East Riding.

By 2035, the number of adults in the East Riding with diabetes is expected to almost double to 30,000, and Graham warned this would create added pressure upon services that cater for these associated conditions.
