Humberside Police have issued a warning to residents following what they say is a notable increase in drink and drug driving.

They say that the number of people caught and arrested for driving whilst over the prescribed limit of alcohol or drugs has gone up in recent weeks.

As a result,  Humberside Police Assistant Chief Constable Chris Noble has issued the following statement:

“Driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs is reckless at the best of times, but in the current COVID-19 crisis it is even more irresponsible.

“Serious and fatal road traffic collisions are regularly caused by drivers being over the limit and such behaviour poses a significant threat not only to other road users but to the emergency services and our stretched NHS who are all involved in the aftermath of a collision.

“We currently find ourselves in the situation where we need to ensure we support the NHS and emergency services, without adding additional and unnecessary pressure.

“Investigations are underway for all the incidents, and our message is very simple; do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs as we will take action against anyone who chooses to drive whilst unfit to do so.”
