Work will begin this month on a £150,000 scheme to repair Grovehill Bridge in Beverley – the main link to one of the town’s big industrial estates.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council contractors will start work on strengthening the bridge, at the bottom of , on Monday 15 August.

The scheme is expected to take three months to complete, but the bridge will remain open to vehicles and pedestrians at all times.

Temporary traffic lights will be installed on either side of the bridge, with a one-way traffic flow imposed, to enable the work to be carried out safely.

Grovehill Bridge is a major transport link between the town and the Grovehill industrial area and provides the only access for larger HGVs travelling to the 60-plus businesses on the site, located between the bridge and Weel Bridge.

The maintenance work is needed to ensure the bridge stays in the best possible condition for years to come and to prevent a 7.5 tonne weight limit being imposed, which would greatly affect businesses in the area.

Councillor , the council’s portfolio holder for planning, highways and transportation, said:

“The implications of not carrying out this vital repair work would be significant, and would have had a major impact on the businesses in that area.

“This bridge repair scheme will enhance the local transport network and ensure that business carries on as normal for the firms on the Grovehill industrial estate.”

The scheme is taking place thanks to the council’s successful bid for £130,000 in funding from the Humber LEP’s Local Growth Fund, with the remainder of the cost met by the council.

The work is due to be complete by mid November.

Dave Waudby, head of infrastructure and facilities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these traffic lights will cause, but we hope motorists will bear with us while we complete these important bridge repairs.”
