Beverley ARLFC produced a thrilling second-half fightback to win the Ray Speckman Memorial Cup at Haworth Park on Saturday.
Trailing 18-6 at the break in energy-sapping heat, Beverley’s powerful pack gradually ground down Cottingham Tigers’ defence to earn a thoroughly-deserved 28-18 victory in front of a vocal travelling crowd.
Second-half tries from Craig Hamlet, Matt Bielby and a superb brace from hooker Gavin Proctor, added to Liam Lane’s first-half try, brought the cup to the town.
But victory was marred when, in the dying minutes and with the match in the bag, Craig Hancock, who had been brilliant in the centres, went down under a heavy tackle and suffered a serious leg injury.
