Mobile speed cameras will appear on the Humber Bridge for the first time as part of a partnership agreement between the Humber Bridge Board and Safer Roads Humber.
The agreement comes after a survey revealed that two-thirds of drivers were not obeying the 50mph speed restrictions while crossing the bridge.
Safer Roads Humber is teaming up again with The Under 17 Car Club Charitable Trust to bring its Pathfinder project to East Yorkshire.
In 2018, 587 young people (aged 16 – 24) were killed or injured on the roads of the Humber region, of which 384 were in the East Riding and Hull areas.
On 1 March 2017, the penalty charge for using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving was changed from a £100 fine to £200 and from three to six points on your driving licence. It is now a year since the changes came into place.
Latest figures from Safer Roads Humber show that 658 drivers were detected using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving in 2017 (Jan – Dec 2017) of which over 400 people have had the opportunity to attend a driver training course. This is in comparison to the 1,200 drivers detected in 2016 for the same offence.
As Christmas approaches, Safer Roads Humber is urging festive party-goers to be mindful of driving while still over the limit the morning after drinking alcohol.
Drivers across the Humber region are being urged to look out for pedal cyclists as Safer Roads Humber expands its ‘Someone’s Son’ road safety campaign to include pedal power as well as motorcycling.
