52nd Wildlife Photographer Of The Year Exhibition Opens In Beverley

This month will see more family events to accompany the hugely popular Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Treasure House in Beverley running until 22 April, one of the key East Riding events in Hull UK City of Culture 2017, in which East Riding of Yorkshire Council is a Principal Partner.

On Saturday 11 March, the Treasure House will host ‘Crazy Cardboard Critters’ from 10am until 3pm.

The Height of the Reeds is a major new sound installation by Opera North for the iconic Humber Bridge, running 1 – 30 April 2017 as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. Tickets are now available.

The installation is an adventure in sound featuring the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North; an original piece of music heard through headphones during a walk across the bridge, alongside the resonances of the bridge and its weather and traffic.

The people of Hull are being invited to become sound explorers as part of a project that will see Scale Lane Bridge transformed into a giant musical instrument for Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

Funded by Hull 2017’s Creative Communities Programme, delivered in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund, Playing the Bridge is series of workshops, performances and installations that draws on the Indonesian gamelan tradition that creates music by striking tuned metalwork.

The conference, which is open to health and social care professionals and those with an interest in women’s mental health, will feature a number of highly respected national and regional speakers in the field of women’s mental health, including Julie Jomeen, Professor of Midwifery and Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Hull.

Potholes are a major problem on the UK’s roads. While some individuals have come up with creative ideas about how to solve the problem, many other potholes remain unrepaired, and grow, causing untold damage to cars and possibly even causing accidents.

They are formed over time, when water seeps into cracks in the road and weaken the layers underneath the bitumen surface, freezing and thawing, which in turn makes the layers above crumble and collapse. As more and more cars drive over these weak spots, the holes become bigger and deeper.

A nun who protected Jews during the Holocaust has been honoured with the 29th Lord Mayor Centenary Plaque this week.

Sister Agnes Walsh (1896 – 1993) was born Clare Walsh in Hull in 1896 and lived at 75 Lowgate (1906-1916). Clare Walsh entered into the Daughters of Charity in 1916 and subsequently became Sister Agnes Walsh.
