Beverley is currently going through a period of transition, having lost a number of players due to the long layoff and also the loss of head coach Will Turnball in the week before the start of the season.
It is taking the players a while to adapt to the different styles of play introduced by the new head coach and this is resulting in a great deal of frustration for their supporters.
As can be seen from the results thus far in the season, there appears to be no happy medium in the Beavers’ performances as they play some excellent rugby one week racking up 40 odd points and then shipping as many the following week.
This weekend against Selby they fell behind after 5 minutes to a try by centre Kelly which was converted by stand-off Wright (0-7) and had to repel several strong attacks on their line. This they somehow managed until following a penalty successfully converted by Wright (0-10) Beverley’s defence crumpled to let in left-wing Webster for a converted try (0-17).
Phil Duboulay was able to reduce the deficit with a penalty to make the score 3-17 at halftime.
The second half started a little more promisingly with the Beavers stringing together some lively passing moves finally resulting, after 55 minutes of play in Phil Duboulay making the first line break and combining with Callum Harvey for the latter to touch down. Phil Duboulay added the extras to make it 10-17.
However, Beverley’s optimism was short-lived as Selby almost immediately hit back with a penalty which was converted by Wright (10-20). The play was fairly even for the next 15 minutes but then Selby struck again with a converted try 10-27.
Worryingly, the Beavers appeared to accept that they were beaten after this setback and Selby ran in three more tries in the final 7 minutes, converting one, to make the final score 10-44.
Clearly, Beverley appears to need some work on their defence. They were hampered today by the late call off from hooker Kris Renwick and consequently won only two lineouts throughout the game, being without an adequate replacement with lineout experience and they need to find one quickly since it appears that Kris will be out for a week or two.
