East Riding Youth Dance – Community Dance Programme

Following the recent Platform event hosted at Spa that saw over 100 young dancers take to the stage, East Riding Youth Dance is once again recruiting for young people to join the exciting community dance programme alongside the East Riding Youth Dance County Company.

The youth dance programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people from Year 5 and upwards to engage in 12 weeks of community dance. Participants will work closely with professional dance artists, providing a platform for those with little or no previous background in dance to have a fun, energetic and inspirational experience.

Those involved can expect to try their hand at a range of dance styles including contemporary and urban whilst developing their creative technique and dance skills.

As a part of the programme each group will contribute to the creation of an original dance piece to be performed at the biggest Youth Dance Platform in the area and showcase their development over the sessions. This platform is set to take over Bridlington’s signature venue, Bridlington Spa on Sunday 20th May 2018.

Community Arts Officer June Mitchell said;

“Joining East Riding Youth Dance is an enjoyable way to increase fitness and muscle tone; improve coordination, balance and posture. The young people involved will have the opportunity to learn creatively with specialist dance artists.”

The youth dance groups are taking place for 12 weeks in six areas of the East Riding: Bridlington Spa (Mondays); Arts Centre (Mondays); Memorial Hall, (Tuesdays); Community Primary School, Hornsea (Thursdays); Trinity Church and Boothferry Primary, Goole (Thursdays); Meridian Centre, Withernsea (Fridays).

Dance artist and co project co-ordinator Dawn Holgate said:

“The dance artists tailor the shape of the dance pieces to reflect the thoughts and ideas contributed directly from the young people. East Riding Youth Dance is more than just dance, it is an opportunity to work as a team and helping to boost your skills and confidence.”

East Riding Youth Dance will also audition for talented dancers to join its very successful County Company. Auditions will take place on Sunday 18 February and will offer participants exceptional opportunities working with some of the country’s top professionals.

The audition workshop will take place at The Arts Garage 2, , Woodmansey HU17 OTB and sessions will continue there on a fortnightly basis on Sundays 10:15am to 2:15pm.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to create their own dance work, enhance their skills and perform to audiences across the region. There will also be the opportunity to work with world class dance companies and perform with other national and regional youth dance companies.
