Beavers Stay Second After Narrow Win Over Keighley

Beverley RUFC travelled across to Keighley in confident mood, lying in a handy second position in the league table following last week’,s convincing victory over Moortown.

Starting well Beverley dominated proceedings for much of the first quarter and after 19 minutes took the lead through a Luke Hazell try which was converted by Phil Duboulay.

Keighley began to come more into the game and, after 23 minutes, reduced the deficit to
3-7 when Beverley were caught offside and Alex Brown kicked the resultant penalty.

Straight from the re-start Keighley flanker Tom Willson ran from his own 22 metre line right through the Beaver’s defence and was hauled down only a metre short preventing what would have been a spectacular try.

Keighley were beginning to look very dangerous and Beverley’s cause was not helped by some unusually poor tackling during this 10 minute spell which inevitably led to a try for the Keighley full back Jake Duxbury. This was converted by Alex Brown.

Beverley started the second half pretty much like the first and immediately put Keighley under pressure in their own half.

Eventually Jack Garvin rounded off an excellent three quarter movement with a fine try in the corner, too far out for the conversion but to give them a slender 10-12 lead after 55 minutes.

Playing conditions, which had always looked difficult, were deteriorating as the wind strengthened and this contributed to a final 25 minutes of play littered with mistakes from both sides.

Little inspiring rugby was on show and matters were not helped by the continual re-setting of scrums, necessitated by them wheeling due to the dubious technique of the Keighley loose head prop who, otherwise, had a fine game.

Beverley managed to hold out and were relieved to hear the final whistle.

Beverley were strangely under par in truth but Keighley are a good side and will feel a little hard done by with the final result.

Beverley’s man of the match was chosen by David Bell and was .

Next week Beverley take on Selby at Kick-off 2.15PM.

Final Score: Keighley RUFC 10 Beverley RUFC 12
