Building Beverley's Past - Archives In 3D This Saturday

If you have ever watched those TV documentaries like ‘Time Team’ and marvelled at the amazing digital models that they make of old buildings – staff at the Treasure House in Beverley are going to show visitors how it’s done with a new beginners’ workshop in 3D Archives on Saturday (19 March).

The TV experts seem to take a few scraps of information and then digitally recreate historic structures, as if from nothing. If you have ever looked at these digital reconstructions and wondered how on earth they do it – digital modelling can actually be made quite simple, provided you’ve got the right kit.

The workshop, called ‘Archives in 3D’, is being offered by the East Riding Archives Service and will show complete beginners how to make computer models of historic Beverley buildings using old plans and documents preserved in the Archives.

Archivist Sam Bartle said: “If you’ve always admired the architectural features of places like Beverley, then this is the perfect opportunity to combine new digital skills with historic archives. There are just a handful of places left though, so book quickly to avoid disappointment.”

Aimed at the complete novice, this workshop will teach participants the 3D modelling basics on how to recreate some of Beverley’s historical buildings from original architectural plans and documents held in the archives.
Visitors will be able to try their hand at modelling the gothic features of , or the classical front of an 18th century mansion which once stood down Eastgate, before the time of the Armstrong Patents factory. Recreate the red-bricks of medieval North Bar, the tower of St Mary’s Church or even have a go at bringing the old Beverley Mechanics’ Institute back to life.

Hannah Rice, digital modelling tutor, said: “3D modelling is a fun way of interpreting archives and can give you the foundation to make backdrops for your very own computer-generated images or animations.”

‘Archives in 3D’ will be held on Saturday 19th March, 10-3pm in the Treasure House Room. Tickets are £12 for the full day and booking is essential as places are limited. Please bring your own laptop, although we do have a limited number available for reservation by emailing archives.service@eastriding.gov.uk.
