Flemingate Development:Locals Express Concerns Over Planning Application

Developers of the Flemingate site in have submitted an application to for change of use for one of the new Units.

who runs Crumbs Deli next to the site told .net:

“As far as we know food outlets were never part of the original application. When notified of this we quickly raised our concerns.”

“The unit in question is just a few feet away from our shop and of course we are worried about the effect it will have on our trade.”

No decision is likely until late February or early March about whether the change will be approved, though assurances are being made that any change would not allow a outlet to move into Beverley.

  1. Why do we need another supermarket near the minster? Really bad location. Typical builders, say one thing to get stuff through then do as they like and try to bulldose through planning! Hope ERYC turn the changeoever down and do something right for Beverley for a change

  2. Another supermarket, don’t ERYC understand with this application and the introduction of ASDA in the Nettos site only one thing can happen, all food shops in the area will lose trade and may even close.

We now have enough food shops in Beverley. Can members of ERYC drive round the area and see how many food shops we have as i don’t want the area to end up like whitefrigate or princes quay when St stephens was opened, shops closing as this is all it will do with the introduction of another food store.

I myself can name three shops on grovehill road alone never mind other shops round the area.

  3. I am currently in my 3rd year of a Business Management Degree and will be writing a dissertation based on how large retail and leisure developments affect small local retail and hospitality businesses. This is a topic of great interest to me, as i only recently moved to Beverley from Hull i myself am disappointed with the development. One of the reasons for moving here was the size and locality of the town centre and the views of the Minster from my house. I for one would not like this view to be ruined by a plastic looking hotel and cinema and for the shops that i enjoy visiting and spending money in at the moment to be closed down as they are unable to compete with the likes of Debenhams and such, however i would be interested to see if this development increases the footfall in visitors to the whole of the town or if it will be concentrated in the Flemingate area…
