City Of Culture Chief Comes To Beverley Literature Festival

City Of Culture Chief Comes To Beverley Literature Festival

, Chair of City of Culture 2017, will be appearing at Beverley Literature Festival on Friday 2 October. As a former BBC Arts Correspondent, Rosie is used to interviews – as the interviewer.

But now the tables are turned. She is coming to the festival to talk about a new departure for her – her first novel, The Square – an hilarious and satirical romp which focuses on the secret lives of a group of people who live in a square.

Rosie will be sharing the platform with another well-known writer who is taking a leaf out of Rosie’s book to try something new. Lisa Jewell is one of the queens of ‘Chick Lit’ and regular Sunday Times bestseller.

She will be discussing The Girls – a break-out book for Lisa. She too has written a novel set in close-knit square – but there the similarities end. With this book she has tapped into the thriller market with a gripping plot that delves into some of our inner-most fears.

Expect thrills, laughs and some sharp observations from two women who really are top of their game.

Rosie Millard is a journalist and broadcaster. She was the BBC Arts correspondent for 10 years and has also been a profile writer at the Sunday Times News Review, arts editor of the New Statesman, theatre critic, columnist and feature writer.

Rosie makes TV and radio documentaries and appears on a variety of national TV shows. She is the Chair of Hull City of Culture 2017. She attended theUEA/Guardian Novel Writing Masterclass in 2013 where she wrote The Square, a modern comedy of manners.

Lisa Jewell had always planned to write her first book when she was fifty. In fact, she wrote it when she was just twenty-seven. Inspired by Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity, a book about young people just like her who lived in London, she wrote the first three chapters of what was to become her first novel, Ralph’s Party.

It went on to become the bestselling debut novel of 1998. Twelve bestselling novels later, she lives in London with her husband and their two daughters. Lisa writes every day in a local cafe where she can drink coffee, people-watch, and, without access to the internet, actually get some work done.

Secrets & Lives: Rosie Millard & Lisa Jewell takes place on Friday 2 October, 7.30pm, East Riding Theatre, Beverley.
