It’s the moment thousands of parents have been waiting for—and today the results are finally in!
Families across the region are receiving the all-important emails confirming where their children will start school this September, as East Riding of Yorkshire Council releases its primary school place allocations.
And for most, it’s good news…
A huge 95% of children have landed a place at their FIRST choice school—sparking relief for parents eager to secure the perfect start to their child’s education journey. Even more impressively, 99% of families have been offered one of their top THREE preferred schools.
Behind the scenes, it’s been a massive operation. A total of 2,855 applications flooded in this year, with 2,713 youngsters getting into their number one pick and 2,819 securing a place within their top three.
But it’s not all smooth sailing.
A small number of families—35 in total—missed out on their chosen schools. However, most have still been placed nearby, with 31 children offered a spot at their catchment school and just four sent to the next nearest school with spaces available.
Local leaders say the figures are something to celebrate.
Councillor Victoria Aitken welcomed the outcome, saying she was “pleased” so many families got their top choice. She confirmed emails would be landing in inboxes by 4pm, with schools set to follow up directly to help children settle in ahead of the September start.
But the numbers also reveal fierce competition for places…
A total of 27 out of 118 primary and infant schools across the East Riding were oversubscribed this year—meaning demand outstripped supply. On top of that, six more schools filled every available place, leaving little room for late applications.
Despite the pressure, there’s even more positive news for older pupils. Every single one of the 417 children applying for a Year 3 junior school place secured their FIRST choice—an impressive clean sweep.
For parents, it’s a day filled with emotion—relief for many, disappointment for a few—but above all, a major milestone in every child’s journey.
With classrooms filling fast and preparations already underway, one thing is clear: the countdown to September has officially begun.
