Weel Bridge to Close for £1m Refurbishment and Upgrade

Beverley residents, brace yourselves—Weel Bridge is about to disappear! The iconic metal crossing over the River Hull is set to be completely removed and refurbished starting Monday 13 April, in a £1 million project designed to keep the 70-year-old bridge safe and reliable for decades to come.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council says the essential upgrade will take around 12 weeks, meaning the route between Beverley and Weel will be closed until July. Drivers and cyclists will need to follow diversion routes along Weel Road and the A1035 Bridlington-Beverley road. Even the household recycling site at Weel will be shut, with residents urged to use nearby sites at Hornsea, Driffield, or Humberfield in North Ferriby.

The project isn’t just a simple tune-up. Engineers have uncovered corrosion in the aluminium structure, worn mechanical parts, and deteriorating parapets. Combined with its tidal, environmentally sensitive location, the bridge can no longer rely on routine maintenance. The overhaul will see the bridge refurbished off-site under controlled conditions, with modern systems installed and a brand-new shared pedestrian and cyclist path added for safety.

Council spokesman Councillor Paul West acknowledged the disruption, saying: “We understand the closure will cause issues, but this work is essential. Removing the bridge allows us to improve it safely, quickly, and to a higher standard, regardless of the weather.”

Contractor Esh Construction, who recently upgraded Bubwith and Stamford Bridges, will handle the works. Divisional Director Steve Garrigan said: “We’re focused on completing the work efficiently while delivering a bridge that’s stronger, safer, and better for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.”

Once completed, the refurbished Weel Bridge will be lifted back into place, ready to serve the community safely for decades. In the meantime, Beverley locals will need patience—and perhaps a little creativity—to navigate the detours and closures.
