Smokers Quit in Record Numbers Across Humber & North Yorkshire

Big news for health-conscious residents of Humber and North Yorkshire—thousands of smokers are finally ditching the cigarettes with the help of local Stop Smoking Services! New data shows that over one-third more people are setting quit dates this year compared to 2024, making 2025/26 a record-breaking period for tobacco-busting success.

According to NHS England figures, 3,064 smokers have set a quit date with Humber and North Yorkshire support services in just the first six months of the year—that’s 770 more people taking a life-changing step toward a smokefree future. And the success rates are staggering: over half of those who set a quit date—1,572 people—are smokefree after four weeks.

The rise isn’t just local—across Yorkshire and Humber as a whole, the increase in quit attempts is 22%, but Humber and North Yorkshire are leading the charge, with North Lincolnshire almost doubling their numbers, from 249 to 480 people seeking help to quit.

Stories like Hazel Austin’s show just how transformative the support can be. After smoking for over 30 years, Hazel credits the face-to-face support and the Smoke Free app for finally quitting. “It’s life-changing,” she says. “I’ve saved nearly £6,000 in a year and even used it to visit my daughter in New Zealand!”

The stakes are high—smoking still kills around 64,000 people a year in England and costs Humber and North Yorkshire £1.39 billion annually, including millions in healthcare and social care. Experts like Martyn Willmore highlight the lifesaving importance of Stop Smoking Services, noting that quitting can save the average smoker £2,300 a year while drastically improving health.

Innovative local initiatives, such as training staff within social housing provider Ongo to deliver support, are helping residents access help quickly and within trusted communities.

North Lincolnshire Council’s Cllr Christine Patterson says, “These figures are incredibly encouraging. More people are taking that positive first step toward a smokefree future, and we’re committed to helping them every step of the way.”
