The Hornsea & District Hospital War Memorial Challenge Cup, more popularly known as the Tanton Cup (named after P.C. Tanton Esq, who donated the trophy in 1922), returns for its 103rd anniversary season.
First contested in the 1922/23 season, the competition was originally established to raise funds for Hornsea’s War Memorial Hospital. Over the years, it has become one of the oldest and most respected football cup competitions in the East Riding, continuing to bring together local clubs from North Holderness.
Brandesburton entered this season as the current holders.
The competition is overseen by President Stuart Kemp, alongside committee members Ian McLane, Louise Newton, and Phil Ashcroft, who continue to ensure the success and longevity of this historic tournament.
Supporting Local Causes
While the competition was historically run in aid of the Hornsea Cottage Hospital—funding items such as daily newspapers and equipment for patients—the closure of the hospital ward has seen funds redirected in recent years to a range of local causes.
Last season’s beneficiaries included:
- Yorkshire Air Ambulance
- Hornsea First Aid Centre
- Hornsea Inshore Rescue
- Aldbrough Primary School (towards new goalposts)
This year, the committee is also pleased to introduce a Veterans competition, thanks to the support of local veterans teams—offering “more senior”, but still young-at-heart players, the chance to compete.
