Queen’s Baton Relay Celebrated In The East Riding of Yorkshire

Hundreds of people lined the streets this morning as the East Riding welcomed the Queen’s Baton Relay through Beverley and Market Weighton.

The Baton’s journey started at Beverley Minster with the , Cllr Linda Johnson, chairman of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, John Whittle and portfolio holder for economic investment, growth and tourism at the council, Cllr , present to send the first Batonbearer on their way towards Highgate.

The journey continued through Wednesday Market, down Toll Gavel, through , and through North Bar before being met by a raucous reception on its final stop outside Longcroft School.

The Baton then made its way to Market Weighton and Batonbearers continued the journey down High Street and Holme Road before the event came to an end.

Hundreds of local residents came out in the sunshine to cheer the Batonbearers on throughout the morning with schoolchildren from a number of schools also lining the streets to show their support. Children and adults in Saturday Market were also treated to a special short cry from East Riding of Yorkshire Town Crier in support of the Relay.

Cllr Evison said:

“It was a real privilege to be part of the Queen’s Baton Relay this morning and it was great to see so many residents come out in support of the events in Beverley and Market Weighton.

“It really has been a glorious day and a fantastic occasion for the East Riding to be part of. The Batonbearers shared with us some truly inspirational stories from their lives, and it was a lovely moment for each of them to be cheered on by lots of people whilst the Relay made its way through the East Riding.”
