People, businesses, building projects and community groups have been honoured at the annual Chairman’s Awards.

At a ceremony held at Bridlington Spa contributions made by individuals and organisations over the last year which has helped to make the East Riding a better place were celebrated.

Within in the area there was one winner, Tony Baker, who won the Chairman’s Community Award for his work in Cherry Burton.

He is a member of the Sports Field Committee and has accessed grants to plan and build a multi-purpose games area.

Tony is also on the tennis club committee and spends hours checking the courts, the multi-use games area and the outside gym and carries out any maintenance needed.

He has also obtained funding to renovate the toilets which now include four new toilets and hand-washing facilities.

Tony said:

“I never expected to win this at all – I’ve never won anything in my life before! I feel elated, proud, privileged and honoured to have won. I didn’t know that I had been nominated until I had a letter so say I was being considered.”

“We are in the process of refurbishing the pavilion in Cherry Burton so maybe this award will go some way to help raise the profile and the money we need to complete the project.”

Councillor Fox said:

“As my civic year comes to an end I feel privileged and extremely proud to be presenting these awards.

“During my year of office, I have seen first-hand the hard work and dedication of countless people, who work tirelessly within their local communities.

“I have been touched by the great warmth and generosity of spirit, which the area represents, and impressed with the good work being undertaken by many.

“The contribution of local people who give their time and work for others in a voluntary capacity with no though of reward and, without whose efforts, many if the good things we perhaps take for granted in the East Riding would simply not happen at all.”
