Labour Party Say ‘Concerns Are Growing’ Over Plans To Axe Wardens

Campaigners opposed to changes to Sheltered Housing provision have been bolstered over the weekend with news that opposition to Council proposals is growing.

The consultation with residents closes tomorrow with those who are against the plans say residents through the East Riding are voicing their concerns.

Commenting on the issues faced by those in Sheltered Housing, Beverley Labour’s who is keen to see Wardens remain in place said;

“Over the weekend I’ve heard that residents from Pocklington and in Market Weighton are very concerned regarding proposed changes.”

“This is in addition to concerns expressed by residents in two schemes in Beverley.”

“A number of concerns have been raised many of which focus on the personal safety of vulnerable residents.”

East Riding of Yorkshire Council have already dismissed claims they are ‘Axing Wardens’ from Sheltered Housing.

They say that after speaking with residents who live in accommodation where a warden is present, a service they pay for, it was clear that some had differing needs when it came to such support.

As a result of their findings they are exploring a proposal to change the role of a warden so that those tenants who do require support have better access and a better level of service overall which can be tailored to meet individual needs.

The council also keen to stress that their changes are no ‘cost-cutting’ exercise or that the roles are being adapted to save money.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council insist that the changes are being made will help improve the services that are accessed by some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

Mr. McManus added;

“We shall see what conclusions the officers have arrived at once the consultation is complete but I anticipate there could be a robust debate on the issue when the Council meets on 22 November.”
