Hull Successfully Renews Fairtrade City Status

Hull is proud to have successfully achieved Fairtrade City status once again, following its ongoing commitment to promoting Fairtrade principles.

The Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor John Hewitt presented the certificate to the Fairtrade Partnership Group at Full Council. 

Councillor Helena Spencer, Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services and Performance, who chairs the multi-agency Fairtrade Partnership Group said:

“This is great news for the City. We plan to promote Fairtrade to more community organisations, schools and businesses and we will be working towards making Fairtrade Fortnight 2018 the best yet.”

Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the , said:

“We’re very pleased that Hull has renewed its Fairtrade status and laid out clear exciting goals to take Fairtrade further.”

Fairtrade helps small-scale farmers in developing countries ensure they receive a fair price for their products. In addition, the Fairtrade Premium is invested in projects that benefit the whole community, such as educational and medical provisions in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the world.

Hull was first awarded Fairtrade status in 2005 in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade, such as wide availability of Fairtrade products in local shops and catering outlets, high levels of support from local people, businesses, the council, faith groups and schools.
