Humberside Police Roads Policing Team in partnership with Safer Roads Humber conducted a week long operation to catch drivers breaking the law by using their hand held mobile phones whilst driving in our towns and cities.
Funding from Safer Roads Humber was used to hire a plain liveried HGV lorry between Monday 17 October and Saturday 22 October, which was driven and parked up by a police driver.
The passenger in the lorry – a second officer – then used the raised vantage point to spot people using a mobile phone whilst driving.
A support team in an unmarked police cars – in constant touch with officers in the lorry – then stopped and dealt with any offending drivers with words of advice, driver education courses, fixed penalty notices or summons to court.
During the operation:
• 103 people were stopped for mobile phone use;
• 7 for not using their seat belt;
• 3 for not having insurance;
• 2 for not driving with proper control;
• 1 for careless driving; and
• 1 for red light contravention.
