New Exhibition At The Treasure House – Three Men And Their Boats

Treasure House

A new exhibition at the in Beverley from Saturday 8 August celebrates the fascinating history of one of the East Riding’s local sailing clubs – The Humber Yawl Club.

The club was formed back in 1883 by a group of former canoeists who wanted to sail craft that were more suitable than canoes for the tricky waters of the Humber Estuary.

The early club members took part in regattas at Hornsea, raced off the Yorkshire coast, cruised the waters of the Trent and Humber, and even took their boats across the North Sea on steamers to tour around Europe.

Many of the club’s early members didn’t limit themselves to sailing alone – they designed boats, painted, took photographs and produced articles for the sailing magazines of the day.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said:” ‘The exhibitions at the Treasure House are always a great opportunity to delve into the history and heritage of our region. I am sure that visitors to ‘Three Men and Their Boats’ will be intrigued by the stories, objects and artworks relating to the early years of the Humber Yawl Club.’

To launch the exhibition, there will be an open afternoon on Saturday 8 August from 1pm to 3pm, to which all are welcome. It will be a chance to meet the museum’s staff and members of the Humber Yawl Club who have been involved with the project. Visitors will also be able to see the new textiles exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery that shares a watery theme: ‘Waterworks by the Ebor Textile Group’.

Three Men and Their Boats is a Humber Partnership project and is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
