Local Vets Tackle 170 Mile Bike Ride in Aid of Two Worthwhile Causes

Two local vets are taking on a gruelling challenge that will see them cover 170 miles as they look to raise money for a pair of charities that are close to their hearts.

Later this month Karen Tyler and Emma Gray who work at the Norwood Veterinary Group will get on their bikes and pedal across the Pennines tackling the ‘Way of the Roses’ route.

If all goes to plan Karen and Emma are hoping to raise thousands of pounds which they will divide evenly between Unique and Parkinson’s UK.

Unique is a little known charity that supports people who are affected by rare chromosome disorders.

Karen’s daughter, Lottie, was diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder when she was only 19 months old and describes support they get from Unique as amazing.

Speaking about the challenge Karen said;

“As you can imagine, the news was devastating and particularly so because, unlike some conditions, each and every sufferer has ‘unique’ symptoms, leaving doctors unable to give any sort of prognosis.”

“Lottie is now 3 years old and the support myself and my family have received from Unique to help us cope with her condition has been amazing.”

“Although Lottie is a beautiful, happy little girl, she is non-verbal, has learning difficulties, is predisposed  learning difficulties, is predisposed to autism and might, at some point, suffer from seizures, although, being ‘Unique’, doctors are unable to determine how she may progress.”

Unlike Unique, most people will have heard of Parkinson’s UK and will have some knowledge of this dreadful, currently incurable, degenerative condition that affects around 1 in 500 of the UK population.

There are similarities with rare chromosome disorders in that the symptoms and progression of Parkinson’s vary from person to person, although tremors, slowness of movement and rigidity are common among sufferers.

Emma has lost loved ones to Parkinson’s, who, during their lifetimes, received incredible support from Parkinson’s UK.  The charity is currently funding more than 90 research projects to try to find a cure and every £1 invested in research attracts £1 from other funders.

Karen and Emma have already raised over £1,000 and hope to achieve their target of £2,000, to be divided equally between Unique and Parkinson’s UK, to help these two charities to continue their exceptional work.
