Following the removal of the Protection Camp in Walkington, anti fracking campaigners continue to make their feelings known.

On Tuesday, East Riding of Yorkshire Council took direct action and removed all the structures and the camp site after concerns over safety were brought to their attention.

Despite the cold temperatures, protests were staged at the camp and on the road side by local residents armed with placards.

Since May campaigners have been staging a protest that is directed at who operate the Crawberry Hill Site.

During that period there have been numerous arrests and flash points at the site and in the town centre as the authorities look to balance the right to protest with those of the contractors to work.

While the removal of Crawberry Hill Protection Camp sparked outrage from some, it was also welcomed by a number of people including the MP for Beverley and Holderness .

Mr Stuart commenting on events at the time said that he was ‘delighted that this unsightly, disruptive structure is going to be taken down’ adding ‘The council deserve every credit for listening to residents’ concerns and for removing this safety hazard from the side of the road.’

Labour’s Margaret Pinder who will standing against Mr Stuart in May elections  was far less supportive of the action taken by the council.

Commenting on the events the former said, ‘I very much regret that East Riding of Yorkshire Council has taken this step in deciding to remove the camp structures and enforcing that decision’ adding ‘The tradition of public protest in this country is a long and honourable one; the record of its suppression less so.’

For now the though the protesters seem undeterred and although things have been a made significantly more difficult and arguably far more dangerous for them to get their message across with no sign of them going away.

  1. I liked the article about the Crawberry Hill Protectors camp. When I scrolled down the page, I noticed the, ‘Beverley Property Guide’ section and it made me think. IF and when Rathlin Energy do start fracking, near Walkington, the property guide prices will certainly fall.

Around the area of Walkington and Beverley the people will no longer be able to ask good prices for their houses, After all, who wants to live with a ‘Time bomb’ under their homes? Where fracking has taken hold in America and Australia, the people cannot sell of insure their houses.

Wake up and support the anti frackers, they are doing it for you and your children’s future. Once the water supply is poisoned, there’s no going back!
