Strong Words From Coach Spark Braves Into Action

After a lacklustre start by the Beverley Braves, they found themselves 12 nil down after ten minutes, on a hot Sunday morning at the home of Crigglestone All Blacks in Wakefield. But the lads responded well to a strong but fair team talk by coach, Chris Harrison.

Powerful runs by Connor Davis, Joe Mankel and Bailey Clark, finally hit a gap from 20 metres out to score Beverley’s first try. converted from 10 metres in from touch.

About ten minutes from half time, a great passing move from Nathan Collinson, left to kick a lovely grubber to force a repeat set. Another slick spell of passing finally reached James McGahey who sprinted through a gap in the All Blacks defence to score Beverley’s second under the posts. Again Owen Harrison converted well, only to be carried off with a bad knee injury a few minutes later.

The second half was as thrilling to watch as the first, with exciting end to end rugby by both sides. Crigglestone almost scored twice but for try saving tackles from Tom Woods and Joe Wardill. But then excellent move started by Jay Black running at the line, finding the gap and performing a smart offload, ended in the hands of James McGahey who sprinted over for his second of the game. Joe Wardill deputised for the injured Harrison and kicked the 2 points, 12 – 18.

Beverley who are strong on their wings, with Connor Egan and Tom Woods, played again some great rugby to send centre over to make the score 12 – 22, Wardill again kicked the extras with a great effort from close to the touch line. Inman almost scored again with a brilliant piece of individual play, beating a couple of defenders, chipping the fullback, only to knock on just before the line, so unlucky.

Crigglestone did not give up and came back at Beverley, scoring 2 quick trys to level the score at 24 all. They could have scored again, but for strong defence from Harry Bulleyment, Charlie MacMillan and Keenan Barker.

With 3 minutes to go after gaining good yards up the field, Will Johnson got the ball 15 metres out and powered, with grit and determination, passed defender after defender, five or six players could not stop him no matter how hard they tried. He finally slammed the ball down under the posts, for what was to be the winning try. Wardill kicked again to finish the scoring 24 – 30.

The game, which was a joy to watch and could have gone either way and was only marred by the injury to Owen Harrison. All at Beverley Braves wish him a speedy recovery.
