Beverley Grammar School Young Engineers’ Success at National Event

Young Engineers Macsen Sherer and Tom Brown from Beverley Grammar School recently secured a top award at a national event in London.

Both year 8 students were invited to attend the finals of the TeenTech awards at the Royal Society, following their development of a project based on goal line technology. Their idea uses electronics to automatically detect when a goal has been scored in a game of football, thus eliminating controversial decisions.

Tom and Macsen presented their proposal to celebrities including Professor Brian Cox, TV Presenter James May and DJ Janice Long.

Their proposal was voted ‘best project of the day’ and they were presented with a certificate.

Tim Gosling, Head of Technology at the academy, said:

“Tom and Macsen faced stiff competition from over 300 schools throughout the UK, and it is a fitting tribute that they received recognition for their outstanding achievement. We are very proud of both boys.”

Both boys would also like to thank local retired engineer Mr Dave Robson who acted as the boys’ mentor and provided technical help and support throughout the project.
