Dockers Beat Hard Working Braves In Curly Cup

The hottest day of the year so far saw a great game of rugby league at Shelly Avenue with Dockers running out 16-8 winners against a Braves side who put in a huge amount of effort. Playing once again for the Curly Cup in memory of former Beverley and Dockers player Paul Quiney, both sides showed a decent amount of skill in attack and some strong defence entertaining the family and friends on the sidelines.

Beverley took the lead when Marcus Walker spread play left to Lewis Egan who in turn put William Wallis in to space who raced 50 metres to touch down.

Either side of this try Dockers put immense pressure on the Braves line, a huge tackling stint ensuring they did not score. An opposition player was tackled on his back several times over the line, with full back Tom Newton heavily involved along with and William Kirkup. Numerous times Beverley had to drive their way out of their own half with Henry Hughes leading the way followed by Ethan Rowbotham and man of the match Oliver Loney. This great effort with the ball for these three was complimented by their tackling with all of them high in the tackle count alongside William Sanford.

Eventually the Braves line was broken as Dockers shifted the ball left to out flank the defence and make it 4all. Dockers continued to pressure the Beverley line after the re-start with Luke Dobbie taking a high kick to his right wing well and Ethan Oshin putting in some big tackles. It was a piece of bad luck that set the position for the next Dockers try, with a penalty for accidental off-side giving Dockers a further six tackles, allowing them to score with just seconds remaining in the first half. Half time score 10-4 to the home side.

Tom Marr started the second half at hooker and his quick distribution saw good position gained early in the second half. Matthew Hutchinson came on in the pack to give a rest to some of the forwards who had put in a huge amount of effort despite the heat. When it came to defend it was all hands on deck with Oliver Gresswell, and Dylan English putting in a good defensive stint.

Egan then fed Wallis to race away down the left, before stepping inside to wrong foot the defence to score under the posts. At 10-8 it was very close and with over fifteen minutes to play.

All the effort came to nothing however with Dockers passing well to create a third try but with the score at 16-8 it was Beverley who were attacking, Walker held up just short, as the final whistle sounded.
