Longcroft School: The Sound Of Music

 have been setting the hills alive to the sound of in their production of a classic musical and family favourite.

Based on the real story of “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp, “The Sound of Music” premiered on Broadway in 1959. With music and lyrics by the legendary partnership of Rodgers and Hammerstein, it starred veterans Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel.

A resounding success, it transferred to London’s West End in 1961 and has been revived in theatres many times over the years, most recently by Andrew Lloyd-Webber following his search for a leading actress in the BBC’s 2006 “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria”.

However, the musical is more famously known through the big-screen adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Released in 1965, it was an instant box office hit and went on to win five Oscars. Over the past 46 years it has gone on to become one of the best loved films of all time.

This was be the first time permission has been granted for an amateur production in East Yorkshire since it the successful West End revival in 2006 and subsequent tour.

Students and staff at Longcroft worked hard over recent months to stage their rendition of this classic musical, which proved to be a big hit with the audience that packed the Longcroft Theatre for each performance.
