Special Day For Ethan Dalton In The McCain Yorkshire Coast 10K

A large contingent from Beverley Athletic Club travelled to Scarborough last Sunday to take part in the McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k and fun run.

With a field of more than 1000 runners in the 10k the competition was strong but there were some notable performances from Beverley athletes and 14 of them finished in the top ten for their age group.

The race was designated a handicap race for Beverley Athletic Club so handicap points were also at stake.

The first of the Beverley contingent to finish was Steve Peacock.  He had a brilliant run and recorded his second fastest time for a 10k for several years.  He was 20th overall and 2nd in the V45 category with an excellent age grading score of 81%.

Beverley ladies came second in the team competition behind host club Scarborough AC.  Julie Donald, and Helen Storr formed the Beverley team which spanned the age groups.  Donald was fourth LV40, Dawson was the second under-18 girl and Storr put in a fine performance to finish second in the LV45 category with an age grading of 73%.

The men’s team finished in fifth place with Steve Peacock, James Pearson and Steve Ostler forming the team.

The youngest competitor in the 10k was fifteen year-old Ethan Dalton of Beverley Athletic Club Juniors, competing in his first race at this distance.

He was interviewed on Radio York before the race and had his photograph taken with the starter, Perri Shakes-Drayton, European Championship bronze medal winner for 400m hurdles.  Dalton finished in 108th place overall, was the eighth Beverley runner to complete the course and he was also sixth in the under-18 age group.

He crossed the line in 42:28, much faster than predicted by his training runs.  He is already looking forward to his next 10k race.

The Arnott family fielded a full squad of seven siblings, five in the 10k and two in the fun run.  They all had a very successful day in Scarborough.  In the club handicap competition Kelvin finished more than a minute and a half faster than his predicted time and won the handicap. His brother Jordan came second.  Brother Corey finished in a commendable 46:12, sister Kendall was the fourth under-18 girl and brother Curtis was the eighth under-18 boy to finish.  There was a battle to the finishing line in the fun run with Dayna and Taylor Arnott finishing within seconds of each other in 15th and 16th places respectively.

Other notable performances in the 10k were: Tina Wardropper 5th LV45, Denise Robinson 6th LV60, Eugenio Da Sa 5th V55, Brian Richardson 5th V65, David Mushamp 6th V65, Neil Sergeant 8th V55 and Angela Collins 8th LV45.

After a recent surge in membership a number of new members donned a Beverley vest for the first time, among them Gareth Jackson, Kasra Niknam, Jane Goodchild-Pasman, Christine Whitehouse and Penny Booth.  Being part of a club at a big race will have enhanced the experience for them and they will now be looking forward to their next event.

It was also Denise Robinson’s first 10k in a Beverley vest.  After years of supporting her family at races she has decided to take up running herself.  She completed the course in a commendable 64:14 and finished sixth in her age category.  Her husband David and daughter Nicola also took part in the race while grandson Aidan ran the fun run.  Aidan ran really well, averaging 7.5 minutes per mile – “Not bad for an eight year-old!” commented his proud granddad.

There were more than 200 runners in the fun run and Conor Spilsbury was the first Beverley Athletic Club Junior to cross the line.

He finished in fourth place overall and completed the 2.5km course in 9:12:5 a few seconds ahead of clubmate Harry Powell in fifth place.  Dayna Arnott was the first Beverley girl to finish.

The fun run was won by Bradley Shaw in 8:45:2.  The first girl was Tyler Hutchinson in 8:58:2 and in third place overall.

There were 1114 finishers in the 10k and the race was won by Andrew Wiles of New Marske Harriers in 30:57.  The first lady to finish was Kate Avery of Shildon in 35:39.
