Holiday and work commitments severley depleted Rich Shaw’s squad and left him with only 16 players available.
Indeed he was forced to bring himself out of retirement and include himself on the bench. The starting line up was very makeshift with a number of players playing in unacustomed positions. Paul Atkinson was switched to prop and Steve Connolly filled in at hooker.
In a game played in near record temparatures for October loose forward Ryan Watkin and prop Lee Stevens gave talismanic performances for the visitors.
Beverley ARLC started brightly with Liam Lane opening the scoring with a 10th minute try after a sustained spell of pressure on the Haworth line. The pendulum swung the way of the hosts as they added two tries to lead 10-4. The home sides pace out wide exploited Beverley ARLC.
Ryan Watkin had the perfect response for the blue and golds going over for a try which involved beating at least 4 defenders. Poor concentration just before half time saw Haworth pinch a try to go into the interval 16-10 to the good.
The first 20 minutes of the second half was something of a nightmare for the visitors as sloppy handling saw them continually cough up possession early on in the tackle count. Haworth took full advantage to add 2 further tries and lead 26-10. But there was life left in Beverley ARLC as Rich Shaw rallied his troops.
Ryan Watkin added his second try and also Liam Lane added his second try. With the score now pegged back to 26-20 a tight finish was in store but as Beverley ARLC allowed the restart kick to go dead they were unable to get any field position to exploit some pressure and they ran out of time.
The man of the match award was deservedly shared between Lee Stevens who ran himself to a standstill with his non stop charges and Ryan Watkin who continually looked dangerous in attack.
There are no Hull & District Winter League fixtures this Saturday due to the Super League Grand Final.
