New Display at Beverley Art Gallery

‘Spreading Light: The Champney Bequest and Adult Learners’ is the new display at Art Gallery, which features a collection of works produced by a long established Beverley Art Group, whose members have experienced mental health problems.

Tutor, Alan Lewis, has taught the group for a number of years and also works as an attendant at the Gallery and .

The project was instigated by a Heritage Lottery funded exhibition, which celebrated the centenary of the Beverley Art Gallery in 2010 and paid tribute to the gallery’s benefactor John Edward Champney (1846-1929).

As part of project, the art group were invited to attend two workshops devoted to the Champney Bequest. Working alongside Alan, the students took inspiration from the pictures and books, which were donated by Champney in 1929.

Over the past months their initial ideas have been developed and refined and the resulting display presents their highly individualistic interpretations of the Champney Bequest, which they have explored through a variety of mediums.

The curator of the gallery, Dr Gerardine Mulcahy, together with Alan Lewis and his students, will be available at the gallery to meet and greet the public and talk about the project and their work on Tuesday, 24 May between 6-7.30pm.
