This was in many ways a pleasing performance by Beverley ARLFC in comparison to the previous weeks but at the same time disappointing one.

The Blue and Golds had enough possession and territory in the first half to put themselves in a winning position.

Scott Taylor commented;

“I can’t fault the effort and energy but with so many bodies missing in recent weeks, have had to play out of position so we have lacked shape in attack.”

“That said keep that effort going for the last two games and we can end the season on a positive note.”

Numerous players were unavailable for the clash giving the side an unusual look. Lewis Miller lined up at full-back, Tom Moor in the halves, Alex Calvert in the centre and a debut was handed to Elliot Windley at hooker. The visitors had the better of the opening quarter but failed to convert pressure into points.

Slightly against the run of play, the home side took the lead courtesy of their winger, Dan Reid, stepping inside to score. The conversion was missed but Beverley were unfazed. They again pressed forcing a line drop-out with Kingsley Okra-Overton crashing over beneath the posts in the next set. Josh Poskitt converted for a 6-4 lead which increased 5 minutes before the break. Elliot Windley shot out of dummy half with Bobby Downs backing up superbly to touch down beside the posts. The extras were added by Poskitt for a 12-4 interval lead.

Early in the second half aided by penalties, the home side pressed and Scott Turton crossed converted by Jack Reid to peg the scores back to 12-10. In the 48th minutes, a turning point came in the game when there was a seemingly harsh sin-binning for Jordan Precious.

Fighting the play the ball quickly, the referee ruled that he was kicking out in the tackle. Crosfields managed to exploit the numerical advantage while he was sidelined with John Whittaker crossing converted by Jack Reid.

The home side was now in the driving seat and added further scores by Matt Barber and Jack Reid both improved by Jack Reid to lead 28-12. The visitors creditably did not drop their energy levels. There was some determined running from the man of the match Alex Starling with Chris Brown, Ryan Watkin and Alex Calvert all equally prepared to do some hard yards. Lively around the ruck areas, Bobby Downs and Elliot Windley provided plenty of creativity.

In the closing minutes, Beverley got a deserved consolation try. Direct from the scrum, Tom Moor’s intelligent chip from inside his own 20 saw Lewis Miller regather. It was then a footrace over 70 meters of which the youngster again showed a clean pair of heels.
