Beverley Film Society Announces New Season’s Films

An exciting year of world cinema has been planned by Beverley Film Society, which throws open its doors again on Thursday 14th September at Parkway Cinema Beverley.

In addition to its regular programming of ten films, screened on the second Thursday of every month between September and June, the Society’s committee has also added a couple of extra film nights into the mix to ensure members get the very most from their membership.

Chair of Beverley Film Society, Pippa Nixon, said:

“Hull2017 has been amazing for our area, giving local people a wide and eclectic choice of cultural activities to choose from and we are excited to add to this with our new season of films.

“We will be welcoming back our regular members and invite those who are thinking of joining the Society to pop along and join our film club, which is now heading into its twelfth season of films. In addition to our regular monthly film slots we have added an extra two film nights, especially for our members. The Society is also involved in the very first East Riding Film Festival, with an afternoon of all things Judy Garland – featuring a talk, memorabilia and films on 15th October, which is open to all members of the public.

“Parkway Cinema is an accessible venue with a café bar and there is also free local parking near the cinema after 5.30pm. We are ready to greet all local lovers of film to our first screening on 14th September when we will be showing the French comedy drama Irreplaceable.”

Irreplaceable (2016)

A doctor from the city arrives to help him in his task, but the arrangement unsettles Jean-Pierre who considers himself indispensable. In 1979, James Baldwin wrote to his literary agent describing his next book, a personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Director Raoul Peck’s film envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, exploring the history of racism in the United States. Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards.

Neruda (2016)

Popular poet Pablo Neruda was a politician in 1948, when President Videla betrayed his leftist roots and allied himself with the war on communism. As Chile’s most famous Stalinist, Neruda lost his high-powered protectors and went into hiding with his aristocratic Argentinean wife, assisted by members of the Communist Party far more attuned to the hardships of the working class than Neruda himself.

A Man Called Ove (2015)

Ove, an ill-tempered, isolated retiree, who spends his days enforcing block association rules and visiting his wife’s grave, has finally given up on life just as an unlikely friendship develops with his boisterous new neighbours. Directed by Hannes Holm, the film was nominated for two Academy Awards.

Barry Lyndon (1975 re-released 2016)
UK Comedy Drama 177 mins
Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the film originally gained modest reviews but has since been hailed as one of the director’s greatest films. The story follows the adventures of an Irish rogue who wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband’s aristocratic position in 18th Century England. Winner of four Oscars.

8th February
The Handmaiden (2016)
South Korea Erotic Drama 144 mins
Described as an erotic psychological thriller, the film is inspired by the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, with the setting altered from Victorian Britain to Korea under Japanese rule. A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her. Directed by Park Chan-wook. Cert 18.

8th March
Franz (2016)
Germany History War Drama 114 mins
In the aftermath of WWI, a young German who grieves the death of her fiancé in France meets a mysterious Frenchman who visits the fiancé’s grave to lay flowers. Oscar nominated and winner of several awards. Directed by Francois Ozon.

Tanna (2015)
Australia Drama 100 mins
Set on the remote Pacific island of Tanna, this heartfelt story is based on a true life drama. Enacted by the Yakel tribe, the film tells of a sister’s loyalty, a forbidden love affair and the pact between the old ways and the new. Oscar nominated. Directed by Martin Butler and Bentley Dean.

Graduation (2016)
Romania Crime Drama 128 mins
A seemingly honest doctor who regrets living in his native Romania channels his ambitions for a better life into his daughter who is just one exam away from securing a scholarship to a prestigious British university. But when attacked on the eve of her test, he takes matters into his own hands to ensure her success. Directed by Cristian Mungiu.

Paterson (2017)

Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, Adam Driver stars as Paterson who is a bus driver and aspiring poet. Every day he adheres to a simple routine, he drives his daily route; he writes poetry into a notebook; he goes home to his wife Laura, played by Golshifteh Farahani. By contrast, Laura’s world is ever changing as new dreams come to her almost daily. The film quietly observes the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.

The Shepherd (2016)
Spain Drama 98 mins
Drama which relocates a classic western scenario to post-recession Spain. Fifty-something Anselmo is content with his lot as a shepherd but abattoir owner Julián and his neighbour are desperate for Anselmo to cut a deal with a property developer so that they can clear their debts.
