A fantastic photography festival showcasing Hull starts next month before some of the images will take pride of place in watering holes throughout the city.

Winners of the Hull Beermat Photography Festival, chosen by world-renowned photographer Martin Parr, will feature on beermats in pubs and clubs at the end of the year.

To submit a picture all you have to do is upload a photo to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook using the hashtag #Hullphoto2017

The festival’s organiser, photographer Graeme Oxby, said: “We want to turn traditional exhibition style on its head with a new photography festival curated specifically with social settings and social media in mind.

“Forget white cubes, silent galleries and DO NOT TOUCH signs. Instead, picture images of Hull, submitted via Instagram and printed onto beermats strewn across the tables of the city’s pub, clubs and venues.

“Touch them. Critique them. Or simply just enjoy them – and maybe a pint or two, too.”

The competition opens on Saturday 9 September at the first of a number of free photography workshops coinciding with the festival.

The first, led by Dougie Wallace at Kardomaah94, will be followed by workshops from Lottie Davis, Verity Harr and Graeme Oxby.

They are open to all levels of photographer.

Winners will be announced by Martin Parr on Wednesday 15 November at 7pm at Kardomah94.

Winning photographs will be printed onto beermats and placed in selected Hull pubs and venues in December.

, Director of Hull 2017, said: “What an amazing way to get people out and about and taking pictures. The great thing about this project and the whole of the CCP programme is that anybody can take part and let their creativity run wild.

“The idea of displaying the winners on beermats is brilliant and I’m sure they will create lots of discussion and buzz in pubs and clubs throughout the city.”
