East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to carry out major carriageway reconstruction on the A63, between Knedlington crossroads and the East Riding boundary, starting on Monday, 20 March.
The £750,000 project will involve reconstructing sections of the A63, which will be carried out on behalf of the council by Cemex Paving Solutions Ltd.
The work is being funded by money from the Department for Transport, secured through the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund allocation.
Completion of the work is scheduled for mid May, 2017.
The first section of the works will cover the road from Knedlington crossroads to Barnhill junction. The carriageway will be replaced overnight, between 20 March and 31 March, between the hours of 19.00 and 06.00, Monday to Friday.
This section of the road will be closed overnight (but will remain open during the daytime) and there will be a signed overnight diversion through Howden for light vehicles, and via Bubwith and Barlby for Heavy Goods Vehicles.
There will also be temporary traffic lights on the A63 during the daytime – from 09.00 to 15.30 – at various points during the works, in order to replace the gully grates and inspection chambers.
On the night of Sunday 2 April into Monday morning 3 April, the crossroads at Knedlington will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles, in order to allow the reconstruction of the four sections of the crossroads. This closure will be from 22.00 on Sunday 2 April until 06.00 on Monday 3 April.
Dave Waudby, head of infrastructure and facilities, said:
“We fully appreciate that this closure affects the only road access into Barmby on the Marsh, Asselby and Knedlington, and will cause inconvenience on that one night, but we ask that people make arrangements to avoid travelling that night between those hours. The complete closure on one night is by far the quickest way and easiest way to get this element of the work completed. That is why we are announcing this road closure so far in advance.”
When the section of the road to Barnhill Junction is complete, work will then continue along the A63 overnight, controlled by traffic signals and convoy vehicles.
Councillor Andy Burton, portfolio holder for planning, highways and transportation, said:
“This major work will involve deep patching areas of failed carriageway and then resurfacing with a material that gives high skid resistant properties and is a lot quieter for nearby residences and drivers using the road.
“We are also improving the drainage of the road, with new gully grates which collect more water than those at present. We will be replacing inspection chambers to ease the future maintenance of this road.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the works whilst they are in progress, but assure road users that they will see significant improvements on completion.”
This road improvement scheme is the latest to be funded following the council’s successful £16.7 million bid through the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund to the Department for Transport.
This extra funding is being used on a programme of works to improve the condition of ‘A’ roads in the East Riding over the next five years.
