Beverley Classic Car Rally 2013

Beverley Classic Car Rally 2013

The Beverley Classic Car Rally was held this week and due to the maintenance work being carried out in it was switched to the car park in .

The re-location caused some confusion for people, but overall the event passed off without any major problems.

Due to the Beverley Classic Car Rally being staged elsewhere meant less vehicles could take part and despite the warnings from organisers that only pre booked vehicles could take part some turned up.

I think it is fair to say that holding the Beverley Classic Car Rally in the car park meant the event lacked a lot of the atmosphere that comes with it being in the centre of the town.

This is arguably one of the best events in Beverley and there is certainly a better feel when these motors and bikes of years gone by are displayed surrounded by the architecture of historic Beverley.

Walking around the cars this year was just not as engaging, there was a feel of being in a car park at a car boot sale due to the surroundings. Yes, you could still grab a burger and a coffee, but it felt like you could have been anywhere else in the country, it simply was different.

Organisers were very understanding. They commented on how East Riding of Yorkshire Council is very good at supporting their events not just in Beverley but throughout the region and not a lot could be done this year to stage it in the town.

This year was hopefully just a stop gap while the work is completed in Saturday Market, let us all hope that by 2014 the event is back in the middle of the town with all the extra cars and bikes on show.

It was very strange to walk through the middle of Beverley with all the empty streets knowing the car show was on. Yes, the cars were great. They always are but the event most certainly lacked personality with it being located in a car park!

You have to feel for the businesses who would have lost money last night. The bars, café’s and of course Sullivan’s, where traditionally, people line up for fish and chips when the Beverley Classic Car Rally is in town must have all felt the squeeze.

Overall, you have to tell yourself this was just a temporary measure, I cannot think of any reason on earth why this cracking event will not return to the town centre where it rightly belongs.
