Beverley Minster Opens Wide – For Free

This year Beverley Minster has already thrown open gates that have been locked to the public for 100 years. Now it is taking the next step in encouraging the general public inside.

Over three Fridays in summer the Minster is offering free cream teas to anyone who wants to just wander around or hear from expert guides some of the strange, silly and special stories about various whos, hows, and whys connected with the Minster over 800 years.

How did St John of Beverley become a Premiership level saint – and why isn’t he now? Why is there an enormous chair in the nave for an especially fat man?

How many pagan symbols are carved in stone, and what’s the most common piece of graffiti in the ?

Some or all of these questions (and plenty of others) will be answered during the Discover Beverley Minster afternoons, on July 5 and August 2 and 30.

“For over a century the gates to our churchyard were locked to keep away from the building, but that was wrong,” said , vicar of Beverley Minster.

“People told us they wanted to get close and personal with the Minster from outside and we were delighted when we could let them last month.

Now we’re taking the next step, and inviting them inside the building for free teas and the chance to discover what else is here.”

“I’m willing to bet they will be amazed.”

The Discover Beverley Minster afternoons last from 3-6pm on Fridays July 5, August 2 and August 30.
