ERYC Clear the Snow to Safeguard The Festival of Christmas

Everything is being done to ensure goes ahead this weekend in Beverley.

After the cancellation earlier this week of no chances are being taken. Today in the centre of town workers were out clearing the snow and gritting the pavements around the town centre.

The Festival of Christmas attracted thousands people to Beverley last year giving the local economy a welcomed boost leading up to Christmas. who are heading up the event for the first time this year are doing everything to ensure it not cancelled due to the winter weather.

One worker said; “We came to clear the snow that is hanging over the roofs of buildings, normally we work on street lighting though due to the bad weather have been switched clearing snow and roof tops.”

Others were pleased to be back in work, after being laid off they got a much needed boost by being called back to work by contractor Hall Construction to remove the snow from Toll Gavel.

  1. I know people who cannot get out of their roads and streets due to sheet ice and the council are doing everything they can to make sure the festival goes ahead?

  2. It is good the town centre is being cleared, it makes a lot of things easier esp for people to get about.

Our street was gritted though so much snow has fallen it’s a bit much to expect the council or someone else for that matter to come out and shift it.

  3. East Riding of Yorkshire Council has introduced a new pilot scheme to support town and parish councils across the East Riding to undertake snow clearing, gritting and other works and activities on roads and in public places to help local communities cope with the current extreme weather conditions.

The scheme is funded by a grant of £175,000 provided by the council through the Local Strategic Partnership comprising of key partners in the East Riding and is available to all town and parish councils in the East Riding.

Funding can be approved quickly through a simple and straight forward application process administered by the council’s streetscene services team.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby, OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This council must prioritise its resources on the main road network and other key locations to keep the East Riding moving and enable people as far as possible to go about their normal daily lives.

“The workforce is at full stretch with the gritting service working around the clock and with every effort being made to protect vulnerable people who are a priority.

“The new scheme has been introduced to support town and parish councils to undertake work in their localities which we do not have the capacity to do ourselves at the present time.

“This fund will help ensure that more is done as soon as possible which is what everyone wants to see.”

Funding for the scheme will come from a performance reward grant which was obtained by the council and other LSP partners for meeting Government targets earlier this year.

  4. Last week the market was cancelled, the conditions were lethal on the market place and it looked like no attempts was made by ERYC to even touch the site yet alone the efforts seen to accomodate the Festival of Christmas.

Whilst I say well done for finally realising that the centre of Beverley is a bit important to the town surely this should of been tried last week to allow the traders who stand 52 weeks of the year to trade rather than those who come once a year.
