Plaque commemorating the Literary and Philosophical Society unveiled in Hull

A plaque commemorating the Hull Literary and Philosophical Society’s role in the cultural and educational history of the city over 200 years will be unveiled at the Museums Quarter this Thursday (9 October).

The plaque stands in front of three figures depicting Minerva in the Museums Quarter Gardens, that once stood on the pediment of the Royal Institution building in Albion Street, the home of the society from 1854 to 1943 and Hull’s Municipal Museum.

Sports’ governing bodies Join Humber and North Yorkshire UNITED to champion Mental Health

Yorkshire Cricket, the Rugby Football League (RFL) and the three Football Associations representing North Riding, East Riding and Lincolnshire, have formally joined the Humber and North Yorkshire UNITED collective, a pioneering initiative launched in April 2025 to unite sport in Humber and North Yorkshire around mental health, suicide prevention, and self-harm awareness.

A man and a woman from Goole have been prosecuted after bags of their household waste was found fly-tipped in a town alleyway four times. 

Household rubbish belonging to Danielle Farmer and Jake Hall, formerly of Jackson Street, Goole, was found dumped in the access road between Jackson Street and Weatherill Street, on four separate occasions between March and September 2023.

Diamond wedding celebration at Cottingham care home

A couple with almost six decades of memories together have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at Overton House care home in Cottingham.

Barbara and Samuel (Sam) Swallow marked 60 years since their wedding day on 30 August 1965, when they married at St Charles RC Church. The pair first met as teenagers at a summer fair held at Newland Orphanage and have been inseparable ever since.
