On Saturday 15 April the first exhibition celebrating the culture, creativity and food of the Bantu people from south of the equator, will take place in Hull.

Having found sanctuary in the city, many Bantu people from south of the equator now call Hull their home and will share the beauty of their culture during a six-month roadshow around the city.

These are just some of the items that will be placed in the Hull 2017 archives at Hull History Centre, which was recently awarded Archive Service Accreditation by The National Archives. This will sit alongside digital content, which will be stored in the University of Hull’s secure digital archive.

(In)visible Dancing Comes To Hull UK City of Culture

The streets of Hull will come alive with dancing this summer as Luca Silvestrini’s Protein brings its outdoor spectacular (In)visible Dancing to the city as part of UK City of Culture 2017.

The company will work with five Hull-based dance apprentices and five musicians to create the 12th edition of (In)visible Dancing, featuring dance artists, skateboarders, parkour and street performers and a host of performance groups from the region.

Tickets are now on sale for Turn and Face the Strange, the new multi-media show about Hull rock icon Mick Ronson, which has its premiere at the Freedom Centre in Hull on 15 August, as part of the Hull 2017 celebrations.

Turn and Face the Strange tells the story of the legendary guitarist, who grew up on the Greatfield Estate in Hull, from his early years with bands such as The Rats, through his ground-breaking collaboration with David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars, to his innovative work as an album producer with the likes of Lou Reed and Morrissey.

The first of four exhibitions has opened showcasing work created as part of Hidden Voices, an initiative aimed to unlock the voices and creative talents of the 60 homeless people living rough on the streets of Hull who are fed twice a week by St Mary’s Church in Lowgate, will open.

Hidden Voices is one of 60 new projects to receive funding through the Hull 2017 Creative Communities Programme, which is being delivered in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund.

In a major new commission for Hull UK City of Culture 2017, the artist Michael Pinsky is transforming Hull’s tidal surge barrier in The City Speaks, an interactive artwork that contributes to the year-long project, Look Up, challenging and changing the way people see and experience the public spaces of the city.

The City Speaks functions as a 21st century Speakers’ Corner in which open-air public speaking takes on epic proportions as spoken words are translated to text and relayed on the west tower supporting Hull’s Tidal Surge Barrier.
