Held in Belfast, this was the first appearance in the competition for the town. Furthermore, to get a Silver Gilt was quite an achievement. Also, this result is a testament to the efforts of countless volunteers.

Guildhall Greenwich Time Ball Restoration Project Wins National Lottery Support

Hull City Council has been successful in securing a confirmed £281,100 National Lottery grant to fully restore the Guildhall Greenwich Time Ball.

Dating back to 1918, Hull’s Guildhall Greenwich Time Ball is the only such timepiece on a municipal building and one of only a few nationally. It reflects the importance of maritime timekeeping, the link with navigation and the need to fix longitude from the John Harrison period (1720s) to the present.

A new exhibition portraying the skills and satisfaction of manual occupations is coming to The Treasure House, Beverley, on 10 November.

The creation of photographer Peter Barker, ‘Working Hands’ is a series of photographs which show how hand and mind are linked in skilled work, from bookbinding to sheepshearing, from hat making to dog grooming. The photographs suggest a connection between inner and outer worlds, between body and mind, and between thinking and doing.
