JUNK FOOD SHOCKER: East Yorkshire’s Obesity Crisis Fuelled By Ultra-Processed Diets

It’s cheap, it’s convenient — and it could be killing us.

Ultra-processed food has taken over plates across East Yorkshire, and experts say it’s driving a terrifying surge in obesity that’s hitting families hard.

From microwave meals to fizzy drinks and packets of crisps, these factory-made foods now make up a jaw-dropping 57% of the average UK diet. And the fallout? More than 1 in 4 adults are now obese — a figure that’s still rising.

In Yorkshire and the Humber, the picture is even worse. Obesity rates are higher than the national average, with East Yorkshire communities among those feeling the full force of the crisis.

Health experts are sounding the alarm — and the stats are hard to ignore.

People who eat the most ultra-processed food are up to 79% more likely to become obese than those who steer clear. Even small changes can have big consequences — just a 10% increase in junk food intake raises obesity risk by 18%.

And it’s not just adults in the firing line.

Teenagers are now getting around two-thirds of their daily calories from ultra-processed foods — setting the stage for a lifetime of health problems before they’ve even reached adulthood.

So what’s behind the danger?

These foods are engineered to keep you coming back for more — loaded with sugar, fat and chemicals while stripped of real nutrition. Experts say they can even trick the body into overeating, meaning people pile on the pounds without realising it.

In East Yorkshire, the problem is made worse by rising costs and limited access to fresh food in some areas. For many families, junk food isn’t just a choice — it’s the easiest and cheapest option.

But the consequences are devastating.

Obesity is linked to a string of life-threatening conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. And it’s putting huge pressure on already stretched NHS services.

Campaigners are now demanding action — from tougher rules on junk food companies to better support for healthier eating.

Because behind the bold packaging and bargain prices lies a grim reality.

East Yorkshire’s junk food habit isn’t just unhealthy — it’s a ticking time bomb.
