Local charity Doreen’s has once again brought smiles to the faces of children across Hull, breaking their own record by delivering 2,900 Easter eggs to local schools this year. The annual campaign, which has become a beloved tradition over the past six years, is led by mother-daughter duo Sue and Ashleigh, co-founders of Doreen’s.
Last year, the charity distributed 2,420 Easter eggs, but this year’s nearly 20% increase highlights both the growing need and the generous spirit of the Hull community. The initiative is supported by Hull City Council, West Carr Councillors, as well as donations from B&M and the local charity Society of M.I.C.E.
Ashleigh, co-founder of Doreen’s, emphasized the significance of their work during tough economic times. “The rising cost of living has made it difficult for some families to enjoy the simple pleasures. We’re proud to be able to provide a small moment of joy for children who might otherwise miss out. Sharing these treats with the local community helps bring smiles to children and reminds families we’re here to support them.”
Teachers and school staff have praised the campaign, noting its positive impact on pupils’ well-being and sense of inclusion. Doreen’s says the surge in donations is a testament to the community’s strong spirit of giving during challenging times.
The charity recently opened a new Hub at North Point Shopping Centre, providing a welcoming space for the community to gather, support groups to meet, and the charity to assemble care packages and stock their food bank. A spokesperson from North Point Shopping Centre commented, “The dedication and care that goes into the Easter egg campaign each year is truly inspiring, and it’s wonderful to see how these efforts bring a bit of joy and support to families in our local area who need it most.”
Doreen’s, which also provides essential support to struggling families and vulnerable groups such as victims of domestic violence, hopes to expand its reach even further in the future, aiming to support more schools and families in the Hull area.
