Goole pair fined after fly-tipping found four times in town alleyway

A man and a woman from Goole have been prosecuted after bags of their household waste was found fly-tipped in a town alleyway four times.

Household rubbish belonging to Danielle Farmer and Jake Hall, formerly of Jackson Street, Goole, was found dumped in the access road between Jackson Street and Weatherill Street, on four separate occasions between March and September 2023.

Farmer and Hall appeared at Beverley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 24 September and pleaded guilty to four offences of failing in their duty of care to ensure their waste was properly and legally disposed of.

They were both fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £280 and a victim surcharge of £48, totalling £448 each.

The court heard that streetscene enforcement officers at East Riding of Yorkshire Council found large piles of bags of household waste dumped in the access road between Jackson Street and Weatherill Street, Goole, on 16 March, 19 April, 2 August and 6 September in 2023.

Evidence was found linking the waste to Farmer and Hall.

Residents are responsible for disposing of their own waste properly and legally by using household wheelie bins provided or by taking larger items of waste to their local household waste recycling site.

Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Fly-tipping is a serious offence, that causes harm to the local community.

“Abadoning waste is never acceptable. Even if you give it to someone else to dispose of, you are responsible for your own waste, and if it gets dumped, we will take action where we can.”

Anyone caught fly-tipping in the East Riding could be ordered to pay a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 or the case could be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.
