A couple with almost six decades of memories together have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at Overton House care home in Cottingham.

Barbara and Samuel (Sam) Swallow marked 60 years since their wedding day on 30 August 1965, when they married at St Charles RC Church. The pair first met as teenagers at a summer fair held at Newland Orphanage and have been inseparable ever since.

Barbara, now 80, worked as a checkout assistant at Grandways Supermarket, while Sam, 83, built his career as a plant manager at Croda Universal. Together they raised a daughter and have since enjoyed seeing their family grow to include two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Barbara said: “When I first met Sam at that summer fair, I never imagined all the adventures we would go on to share. We’ve had a wonderful life together and I feel very lucky to be celebrating our diamond anniversary surrounded by so much love.”

The couple celebrated their milestone with a party at Overton House, where Sam now lives. Family, friends and staff joined them for an afternoon of country and western music, a buffet and plenty of reminiscing.

Margaret Walker, manager of Overton House, said: “It was a privilege for us to host this special day for Sam and Barbara. Sam was really happy to spend the day with everyone around him who cares for him. They are such a devoted couple, and everyone at Overton House was delighted to help them mark 60 years of marriage in style.”
