A woman from Goole has been ordered to pay a total of £1,123.28 for fly-tipping, following proceedings at Hull Magistrates’ Court.
Natasha Ferguson, of Heber Street, Goole, was found guilty of abandoning waste in a back alley between Heber Street and Kingston Street, Goole.
The court heard that between 40 and 50 black bags were found piled up in the access road on 28 October last year by streetscene enforcement officers at East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The bags were filled with household waste including rotting food, clothes, nappies, takeaway wrappers and food packaging.
Evidence relating to Ferguson was found within the waste and she was invited to attend an interview under caution twice but failed to respond, so the case was passed to the courts.
Ferguson did not attend Hull Magistrates’ Court on Friday 15 August, but the case was proven in her absence.
She was ordered to pay a £440 fine, costs of £350, compensation of £157.28 and a victim surcharge of £176.
Residents are responsible for disposing of their own waste properly and legally by using household wheelie bins provided or by taking larger items of waste to their local household waste recycling site.
Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Fly-tipping is a serious offence, that causes harm to the local community.
“Abandoning waste is never acceptable, and we will use the tools we have, including CCTV cameras, to catch the people responsible.”
Anyone caught fly-tipping in the East Riding could be ordered to pay a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 or the case could be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.
