National Hoarding Awareness Week

Now in its 11th year, National Hoarding Awareness Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of hoarding and those with a hoarding disorder.

Hoarding Awareness Week will take place from the 12 to 16 May and will focus on promoting a greater understanding and acceptance of hoarding and how those affected by it can be supported to achieve positive change.

East Riding Safeguarding Adults Board (ERSAB) is promoting Hoarding Awareness Week, this is based on the ERSAB’s hoarding policy and the newly developed operational procedures, resources and training intended for use across all partners’ staff groups.

The awareness week also aims to educate and support those who can help someone who’s daily life is impacted by hoarding by providing information and resources.

Raising awareness for hoarding disorder and behaviour is crucial because it helps to break down stigmas, promotes empathy, and encourage individuals to seek support without fear of judgment.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s adult social care services have been working closely with members of the public to develop a support framework for people who are struggling with hoarding.

These people are ‘experts by experience’ and have helped to develop a training package which will enable team members to provide support and an appropriate response to those who need it most. This training package will be used by ERSAB partners including the NHS, police and fire services.

Hoarding is often misunderstood and the training is essential in challenging negative stereotypes and highlighting the ways in which mental, physical and emotional health can influence hoarding.

Adult social care services, along with learning skills and workforce development officers used input from service users to pull together the e-learning package.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, cabinet member for adults, health and care at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “Hoarding is a significant issue affecting many individuals in our community. It’s crucial that we challenge the stigmas associated with hoarding and build a stronger support network for those impacted by it.

‘’As an organisation, we are committed to ensuring our team is well-equipped to provide the necessary support. I am exceptionally proud of our team’s extensive work with service users to develop this comprehensive new training package which will be launched during National Hoarding Awareness Week.”

‘’This initiative is a testament to our dedication to improving the lives of those affected by hoarding, offering them the help and resources they need to overcome their challenges.”
