A series of events will be held for residents in coastal communities across the East Riding, to learn about the impact of coastal erosion in their area, and to feed back their priorities.
The events have been organised by the Changing Coasts East Riding (CCER) team, which is funded by Defra as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programme (CTAP). The programme is managed by the Environment Agency and delivered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The workshops have been set up following the release of new maps by the Environment Agency, which provide updated forecasts of the scale and impact of coastal erosion in the East Riding.
The East Riding of Yorkshire has some of the fastest eroding coasts in Europe, with some parts of the East Riding coastline eroding at an average rate of up to 4.5 metres per year.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to sign up to the workshops, to share their coastal erosion experiences and their priorities for their area. Residents will be able to learn about the new national coastal erosion risk maps and discover how they can participate in planning the future of their coastal communities.
Councillor Barbara Jefferson, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for heritage and coastal said “Coastal erosion is a key challenge facing the East Riding, and it’s vital that we work together to plan a long-term future for our coastal communities. I highly encourage local residents to book their place for these workshops so they are able to attend, and share their priorities and concerns about this vital issue.”
The workshops will be held in towns and villages across the coast, from Bridlington to Easington, over the next three months. Spaces will be limited, so residents are encouraged to book their spaces by emailing active.communities@eastriding.gov.uk or by calling 01482 395321
There will be free refreshments and support with transport where possible.
