A team of licensing compliance officers from Hull City Council, Wolverhampton Council, and Humberside Police conducted safety checks on Hull taxis and hackney carriages.
Recently, joint checks have been conducted several times, with the most recent one taking place on July 24. At random, taxis are stopped and thoroughly inspected, including checking the vehicle and the driver’s documentation. There are a number of taxis licensed in Wolverhampton that operate in Hull, which is permitted under licensing laws and regulations.
As a result of the latest inspection, 36 vehicles were inspected, and a number of defects were found, including broken seat trims, a nail embedded in a tyre, faulty door locks that prevented customers from entering the vehicle, and two drivers failing to display their badges. Both authority areas reported that most vehicles were compliant with regulations.
If drivers fail to correct any issues within seven days, their vehicles are immediately suspended. Suspension is only lifted once the problem is resolved.
The joint operation with City of Wolverhampton Council’s Compliance Officers and the Police indicates the willingness of the various authorities to take the collaborative approach necessary to resolve cross-jurisdictional licensing issues, which have become increasingly common and a cause for concern. As far as the foreseeable future is concerned, work will continue as usual.
Cllr Mark Ieronimo, whose portfolio includes Licensing, said: “It’s important people using taxis can feel confident they are safe with both the vehicle and driver. Spot checks are a great way to make sure anyone operating a taxi in Hull is following all the relevant laws and regulations.
“We can help reduce risk to passengers – particularly those who are vulnerable – by making sure drivers have all the necessary documentation, and identify any unlicensed drivers.
“Customers can help ensure their own safety by only using reputable companies and apps when booking a private hire vehicle, or using a clearly identifiable hackney carriage. All licenced drivers should be wearing photographic identification and have their vehicle licence number displayed on the vehicle”.
