A business in Beverley is hoping that East Riding residents will shop local this weekend in support of Small Business Saturday. Saturday, 3 December 2022, is Small Business Saturday.

Founded in 2013, Small Business Saturday began as a grassroots campaign in the UK to celebrate small business success and encourage consumers to support local business owners.

In the UK, customers support all types of small businesses on Small Business Saturday, including independent shops and . Hosting events and offering promotions are some of the ways small businesses promote the day.

Millions of people have participated in the campaign each year in the UK, and over a billion pounds has been spent on the campaign.

For Small Business Saturday, council-run car parks will also be offering free parking, encouraging even more people to visit town centres.

In an effort to boost trade and visitor numbers in towns across the East Riding, the council has offered free parking on four weekends leading up to for 14 years.

The owner of Beverley’s Oh My Dog, Lucy Thompson, hopes residents will come out in support.

Lucy said:

“It would be great to see even more residents come out to support us on the high street on Small Business Saturday and I know a lot of the shops around me have gone to extra effort to look the part heading into Christmas.

“We get a lot of support from the council and that support has really enabled us to get the business off the ground and make a great success of it.”

“Times are tough for everyone right now financially but Oh My Dog continues to be as popular as ever and I look forward to seeing even more customers through the doors on Saturday!”

During a visit to Hornsea and Beverley businesses to promote the campaign, East Riding of Yorkshire Councillor Jane Evison was impressed by the camaraderie between local businesses.
